JOSHUA NEWMAN, LPCC
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
At this time, I primarily see adults for individual therapy. I offer short-term, solution oriented counseling as well as long-term, depth therapy. I am able to address the following issues in my practice: anxiety, depressed mood, anger management, post-traumatic stress and complex PTSD, grief, loss, caregiver stress, situational stress, relationship problems, existential questions, career development, clarification of values and purpose, and many other concerns that frequently bring a person into therapy. I am experienced in working with neurodivergent individuals, including challenges related to ADHD, Autism, and Asperger's Syndrome. I am particularly interested in personal growth, relationship health, career questions, and helping clients to get in touch with their true Self. I am a sex positive therapist and my practice is LGBTQ+ friendly.
PROFESSIONAL BIO:
I am an author, counselor, clinical supervisor and workshop organizer. I have worked in the mental health field for over twenty years. I got my start providing counseling and case management at a regional community mental health center in Northwest Arkansas before I opened my private practice in 2005. Having found it particularly satisfying to work with a wide range of people who present a broad spectrum of issues, I operate a general practice. I am passionate - possibly a bit obsessed - about the quest to identify and study the factors that lead to positive psychotherapy outcomes.
The profession of psychotherapy has undergone vast changes over the years. From the early days of psychoanalysis, to the second and third waves of humanistic-existentialism, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, mental health treatment has reinvented itself from the start. Social-justice movements and shifting cultural values have shaped the way in which clinicians endeavor to relate to their clients and in fact how they conceptualize of mental health. In recent decades, we have seen a proliferation of body-centered, mindfulness-based, trauma-informed modalities emerge. Many of these newer therapies - drawing upon the latest findings from neuroscience - have moved away from the sole pursuit of a "talking cure" instead utilizing a more holistic toolkit to help clients find relief from complex and persistent problems. I am a firm believer that the most effective therapy is client-centered, eclectically-sourced, and holistic.
My education includes a Bachelor of Arts from Hendrix College, (double major in Psychology and Comparative Religion) and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Southwestern College.
Over the years, I have found meditation to be helpful, both personally and professionally. I was first exposed to meditation practice by the late Zen Master, Keido Fukushima Roshi, during a religion class in college. I have attempted to maintain a meditation practice ever since.
